The Old Curiosity Tea Shop has always piqued my interest but not until recently have I had the chance to go in for a cup of tea. If you’re living in the Markham area then you’re likely already familiar with this local gem. This place is all about traditional English fare served on Royal Doulton China, set in a cozy tea parlour. Are you curious yet?
Quaint Victorian decor from top to bottom
But first, some tea!
Royal Doulton China
Afternoon tea for two
Traditional ham and cucumber finger sandwiches
Desserts, scones and clotted cream!
Large currant scones with a side of cream and jelly
The raisin scones had a nice crust to them with a warm and tender centre. The size reminded me of the ones from Niagara, but I’m sorry to say that I really wasn’t a fan of the clotted cream, which was tart and not sweet at all. Although I was assured that the cream was freshly made by their supplier that morning I just wasn’t a fan of it. I’m really hoping they will switch to sweeter clotted cream in the near future!
Teapot sugar cookies, cute! 🙂
Aside from afternoon tea Joseph also ordered a savoury steak pie from their regular menu. It came with a garden salad and warm baked beans.
Overall our afternoon was pleasant. If you’re looking for a down-to-earth, quaint and cozy Victorian environment then this is the place for you. If you’re looking for refined and modern fare then I suggest you look elsewhere. What truly stood out for me, in comparison to other afternoon tea venues, was the hospitality we received from Adam, our host and server. He provided exemplary service: always attentive, polite and never rushing. Go check them out if you’re ever in Markham! Reservations are recommended. 🙂
Cheers,
