The entire city of Toronto is covered in ice! After suffering through freezing rain and arctic cold temperatures, what remains is a thick sheet of ice over our cars and precipitation weighing our trees down. We pray that everyone makes it through safely, and may we all have heat and electricity in the days to come (two things we certainly take for granted)! While Father Winter leaves his mark behind, Joseph and I would like to reminisce about cozier days… days with bowls of hot delicious ramen at Santouka!
Our poor car all iced up!
Santouka is conveniently located within walking distance from the Eaton Centre, so right before our shopping excursion we decided to fill up on some ramen! Seated at the bar, we chose the Shio Ramen (left) and Miso Ramen (right) and ordered extra noodles and toppings like we usually do.
Shio Ramen: topped with a red japanese pickled plum (umeboshi). The plum is soft, vinegary, and appetizing but beware of the seed in the middle. We liked that they sprinkled toasted sesame seeds on top of the pork for that extra flair of flavour (yum).
Miso Ramen with pork, green onions, bamboo shoots, black fungus, and narutomaki.
We thought both soup bases were delicious, and the noodles were cooked well. Such a perfect treat to warm our bellies (and all other bellies of Toronto), it’s no wonder there’s often a lineup! The seating area was comfortable, and the staff was very polite and pleasant. Originating from Japan, Santouka is also present in the U.S as well as Asia with many restaurants throughout. With the current ramen craze in Toronto, it’s very interesting to see how everyone creates their own renditions of the classics (you can catch our reviews on Sansotei and Sonoya here). Slowly but surely we hope to try them all!
