Jelly Modern Doughnuts: Toronto

It’s Jelly Modern Doughnut time!

I had a huge afternoon craving for these goodies, so Joseph and I made a quick pit stop at Jelly Modern Doughnuts. For first-timers, just follow the pink donut (or doughnut) sign and you’re there! It’s difficult to find parking in front of the store, so either take public transit or park on the side streets. I really adore the interior of the store; it’s bright and cheerful with the same pink and white theme present in their logo. Definitely coming back for an afternoon snack with the girls!

Left: 3-bite size. Right: regular size

They have two different sizes of doughnuts available: either “normal” ($2.75) or “3 bite” ($2.25). Personally I find their “3 bite” (which actually worked out to be 4 bites) to be the perfect size for sampling, and much like a Tim Hortons donut. For 50 cents more, their “regular” size is a lot larger and good for those who know what they want. Without a moment to spare, I ordered 6 different 3 bite doughnuts and we zoomed home to devour these treats immediately.

Nom nom nom! The actual doughnut base itself is consistently soft (because it’s fresh), and has a nice bite to it.

Creme brule – the filling was authentically eggy tasting, so I could see how this resembled the French dessert, plus the icing wasn’t overly sweet.

Salted caramel – Ooo, delicious! I’ve always been a fan of the salt and caramel combination, but this caramel is exceptionally tasty with a deep, almost toffee-like, flavour. The salt just makes you want another!

Coconut – MY FAV. At first glance I wasn’t too sure about this one because I’m usually not a fan of shredded coconut in my sweets, although I love anything coconut flavoured. Sometimes the crispy texture of the shreds contrast too much with the softness of the pastry, but no need to worry here! The shreds are there to tell you that this was made with REAL coconuts, plus you don’t even notice them! They’re completely engulfed by the icing. It’s the coconut milk filling that’s the show stopper here, and I’m obsessed with it – sooooo milky and light, while fully embodying the essence of coconut. I had to order two more the very next day lol.

S’mores – great marshmallows made in-house, and tastes just like the treat it’s named after. If you order this in a box of doughnuts, then eat it last because the chocolate has a stronger taste than those with white icing.

Strawberry Cheesecake – this had the most filling of all the other doughnuts we bought, and the strawberries in the jam was delightful! Great for those who like something fruity.

Maple Bacon – yes, those are REAL bacon bits on top of the doughnut and such a Canadian feature. Although I would have preferred the maple flavour in the icing to come through more, the salty and crispy bacon flavours definitely did. Once again, sweet and salty is a delectably delightful combination.

Update: Jelly Modern Doughnuts is now also available at Pusateri’s at Bayview Village. I picked up a few more doughnuts on their opening day (see pic above) and tried the peanut butter cup, madagascar vanilla, callebaut chocolate, pralines and cream, and coconut again. Each were as equally delicious as the others! However, if this is your first time having a Jelly Modern Doughnut, then I highly suggest you make your first trek to the official Toronto store at College and Bathurst. Although Pusateri’s is a convenience, you don’t actually get the full experience of the Jelly brand there. The Jelly store has a larger selection of gourmet doughnuts made fresh on site (Pusateri may have less than half of that), and the Jelly store has a much more inviting space, plus the patience, knowledge and appreciation of the staff.

Okay, now go out and get some doughnuts!
