Lunch at Mercato was an afternoon spent catching up with a dear friend, and celebrating life and belated birthdays together. I find that the older I get the fewer wants I have, and the best gift you can give someone is your time and undivided attention. The spirit of the restaurant made it easy for us to divulge in our stories – it was upbeat and cheery and the food was just what we needed, comforting and delicious.

Mercato is located inside the Mars Building tucked away at the far east end, and within walking distance of the University of Toronto campus, a myriad of hospitals, and Queen’s Park TTC station. There was a long lineup outside the door when we got there, but luckily a reservation was made beforehand. Seating was cozy, and the interior decor was chic in all-white.
We ordered two pizzas and orecchiette pasta. In the centre is the Prosciutto pizza that was very well made with a thin crust and fabulous yet simple toppings of prosciutto and arugula.

Orecchiette pasta with lamb neck meat and tons of shaved pecorino cheese.
The birthday tart was a complete surprise for me! It was brought in and kept inside the restaurant’s fridge until the very last minute when they graciously cut and served it to us. Fresh berries to the max, and a delicious custard base! Mmm mmm mmm!
